The night is starlit with soothing sounds from the foliage of palm trees and - when the wind is from a southerly direction - waves on Shela Beach.

Halfway between Lamu Town and Shela Village, on Lamu Island in the Indian Ocean.
‘Shamba’ means ‘farmstead’ or ‘small plantation’ in Swahili, and our Shamba is part of a landscape of tropical fruit and nut trees in an old Lamu plantation landscape with gently rolling sand dunes, culminating at greater height along Shela Beach in the south. We have trees of coconut, mango, tamarind and cashew to enjoy the fresh fruits of, season permitting.
In this rare setting, Shamba Viking is a different experience. It provides space to take it all in. During the day of most of the year, there is your choice of sun or shade. Lamu is hot and humid, yet on the raised eastern part of the Shamba where our Lodge is located, a cooling breeze is almost always present.
The is reached by foot or donkey: 10 minutes from the Ocean; 15 minutes from Lamu Town; 25 minutes from Shela Village; and, 30-40 minutes from Shela Beach. By foot and boat, time to and from Shela is around 15 minutes.
Njumba (house) Viking – climate adapted, energy saving and eco-friendly. Perched on a 'hillock' at Shamba Viking’s eastern end, is our climate adapted ‘Njumba’ or Lodge. Providing views over the Shamba and surrounding landscape, its elongated shape cross-ventilates for comfort. The Lodge is also located, orientated and constructed to minimise solar gain - irrespectively of whether the Monsoon is from the southwest or north-east.
Purpose-designed to optimise between privacy and transparency – the lattice walls of the Shamba Lodge let the Ocean breeze reach all its parts. The voluminous, ventilated, roof space and elevated floors – on columns above the ground - assist in cooling. The only heat adsorbing walls, floors and ceilings are in the bathrooms. They allow for privacy, yet they enable air circulation and cooling through specially designed air-cooling wall openings and ceiling funnels. In the coastal climate context, the house is likely to contribute to the discussion on energy saving climate control.

The Lodge is constructed from low energy building materials, has solar powered lighting and hot water systems, complimented by a grey-water system that returns used water with its nutrients to the land. As part of a Lamu ecological sanitation project, we only use waterless, non-polluting but nutrients recycling, state of the art separation toilets.
Uniquely designed and built, the Lodge has three parts: 2 double/twin bedrooms with shared bathroom and lobby in between – the easternmost bedroom has a roofed wooden deck towards the East and its gentle morning sunrise; 1 double/twin bedroom and 1 kitchen with bathroom and lobby in between – the bedroom has a large, roofed, wooden deck towards the West and its spectacular evening sunset; and, 1 roofed wooden deck for living and dining in between the two other parts - this space may be used as a studio.
The bedrooms have single beds that may be placed singly or together with mosquito nets to fit either choice. Thin wooden strips wall matting protects against rain and gives privacy, but allows air though. Curtains for privacy are there. There is also a ceiling fan in each bedroom, and each bedroom has a safety box.
The kitchen – with open able panels for contact with the dining/living space - has ample worktop and shelving surfaces, electric hob and oven, micro oven, double basin sink with hot and cold water, two fridges, freezer and washing machine.
Each bathroom has hot and cold water. The washbasin - carved out of a coconut tree trunk - is set in ample shelving. There is a shower and toilet. The bathroom is reached through a ventilated lobby.
The breezy lounge has open walls towards two sides to let you take in the greenery and undulating landscape. Elevated off the ground, the lounge is great for up to 8-10 people to dine and relax.
A pavilion next to the main house provides for breezy conference space for ten - around purpose-designed round table with chairs. Electricity is there.
Internet access may be provided through a local telephone operator modem attached to your laptop at nominal cost, or though an Internet café in Lamu town.
Property has a swimming pool, which is available for guests except in exceptional circumstances.

Guest Access
Renting one, two or three rooms in the main house, you will have access to the dining/sitting room and kitchen - also free mango, tamarind and juice of coconut, season permitting. Our swimming pool is there for you, except in limited cases of high maintenance, high rainfall or shortage of mains water.
If you rent a room towards the sunset, you will have your own spacious deck, shower/toilet room with lobby.
If you rent a room towards the sunrise, you will have your own deck and own entry access. Shower/toilet room with lobby may be shared with a maximum of two persons.
If you rent a room towards the dining/sitting room, you will share shower/toilet room with lobby with a maximum of two persons.

The Neighborhood
The tranquility and space of the lightly undulating sand dune landscape is a treat. Yet it is only a short walk by foot and or trip by boat to Lamu town - which is a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site - and Shela Village, near fantastic swimming and bathing at untouched, kilometres long, Shela Beach.
At night the sky is star lit through the foliage of the palm trees - this scene is sublime when the moon is out!

Getting around
Our contacts will provide you with boat transport, only a few minutes' walk from the Lodge. You may choose between different boat types - a faster one for the Manda Island airstrip, Lamu town or Shela Village, or, a wide hulled and comfortable Mozambique Dhow for swimming, bathing, fishing and/or sun downer.
